WHAT NEXT??

Now the 2013 match is over, SOAP is done and technically Match season is over. Of course, there are still options like getting matched out of ERAS into unfilled spots, contacts coming into play and one getting into the residency program because someone else had to drop out.

SO , albeit for this rare chance things are technically done for this year. Congratulations to all those who matched and my sincere regrets to those who didn't  As I keep reading the posts in various groups and pages on FB that I moderate most of the candidates who didn't match are thinking of the various options that are lying in front of them. Before you decide what you are going to go I suggest you read this article so that you can get a better perspective of things.

First off, GO OUT & PARTY!! Yes, you heard me right and no typos. PARTY!! Forget about USMLE, Residency, Match, SOAP and everything else!!! The previous year was stressful and though the outcome was what you had not expected doesn't mean you don't deserve a equally well deserved break!!! It can be anything depending on your budget and your inclination :) Beach, mountains, travel, surfing, scuba diving. For others pick out all the  movies you didn't see, others see all the soap operas you missed and cry your heart out. Anything!!! Just no more USMLE or anything related to it for the next 10-12 days.

Right now, its the wrong time to listen to advice or seek the same. Your thinking is not in the right frame of mind. When you are upset, angry and frustrated you end up making wrong decisions which you may regret later!! Don't take advice from anybody. This is not the time. Eventually any decision you make will have to be yours and not others. And this period of mourning is not the time for big decisions.

Once you are done and are on the road to recovery its time to sit down and evaluate your position. And it should be an HONEST one. NOT asking others, your mom, your dad or your astrologer!! You and you alone have to do it. Pull out your application, your scores, your PS, the places where you applied and the rest of the whole thing!!! Your job now is to answer the following questions.

1. WHERE DID I GO WRONG?
2. WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE?
3. DO I WANT TO CONTINUE ON THIS ROAD?

Only you can truly answer this question. Plan how you are going to fill up the lacunae in your application. Now USCE? Start emailing every damn person and pull up every contact you have. Poor interview skills, start conversing with your friends always like its an interview!!! No publications? Start looking around for research subjects and interesting case reports. Trust me. There is no shortage of cases around ;) I published 4 cases in International Peer Reviewed journals in a year!! If I can do it then anybody can!!

For the first time applicants, usually around 60-70% of them don't match on their first attempt. So, that's not a reason to quit and give up. Those who have tried the second time have usually succeeded :)

There are things you cannot change. Low scores, old graduates, multiple attempts on your steps. Thats where your personal statement comes in. Prepare the ground work of an awesome mind-blowing personal statement which would want programs to hire you in their program!!!

Now, for those of you have already done everything and beyond you could. The advice I give you? I am not the right person to answer that question. Nor is anyone else. Being one of those who wish the underdogs to win all the time, I tell that inside your heart of heart if you still feel there is a chance... go for it. Do not bother what others say. There are so many "Realists" out there who would say its not worth it and that you could do better!! Don't believe them. Realistically assess your chances and if you still feel you can do it, THEN JUST DO IT!!!

I leave this article with one of my all time favorite time quotes. It has got me through some of my toughest times. Hope this inspires you like how it has always inspired yours truly. Wishing you all the best my dearest friends :)

"All your life you are told the things you cannot do. All your life they will say you're not good enough or strong enough or talented enough; they will say you're the wrong height or the wrong weight or the wrong type to play this or be this or achieve this. THEY WILL TELL YOU NO, a thousand times no, until all the no's become meaningless. All your life they will tell you no, quite firmly and very quickly.
AND  THEN YOU WILL TELL THEM YES."  ............Nike
